Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center Offers Free Skin Cancer Screening on May 8
A free skin cancer screening will take place at the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Saturday, May 8 from 8 a.m. to noon. Area dermatologists and physicians will be providing the screenings by appointment. This free screening is recommended for anyone who has not been examined by a dermatologist in the past 12 months.
May has been designated by the American Academy of Dermatology as Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer. According to 2009 estimates from the American Cancer Society, 68,720 new cases of melanoma were found and 8,650 deaths were caused by melanoma last year.
Melanoma is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of pigment-producing tanning cells. Melanomas may appear suddenly without warning, but also can develop from or near a mole. They are found most frequently on the upper backs of men and women or on the legs of women, but can occur anywhere on the body. Advanced melanoma spreads to internal organs and may result in death. If detected in the early stages, melanoma usually can be treated successfully.
Appointments are preferred because the number of patients who can be screened is limited. Please call 304-526-2379 for more information or to schedule your screening.
