Cabell Huntington Hospital welcomes Scott Mitchell, MD, a board-certified physician specializing in palliative care, to the Medical and Dental Staff. He specializes in controlling pain, alleviating psychosocial distress and addressing spiritual issues to support the continuum of care for serious and chronic illnesses such as cancer.
Short-term palliative care is often provided along with cancer treatment. However, when a patient reaches the point when cancer treatment is no longer warranted, palliative care becomes the priority. The goal is to alleviate the physical symptoms and east the emotional issues related to their diagnosis and help transition to end-of-life care.
Dr. Mitchell received his medical degree from Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine where he also completed his residency in family medicine. He is board certified in family medicine and hospice and palliative care.
"Palliative care is an important component of the healing process for patients with cancer," said Chad Schaeffer, executive director of the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center. "Dr. Mitchell will provide supportive care and symptom management throughout our patients’ journey. The goals of palliative care are dignity and compassion for the entire family."
Dr. Mitchell is accepting patients at the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center, located at 1400 Hal Greer Boulevard, Huntington. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please call 304.399.6500.
